Fire Safety Tips for the Holidays
While the cause of the Amsterdam and 107 Street fire this past Tuesday remains under investigation, there are conditions that increase the likelihood of fires this time of year.
We should especially be mindful of seasonal hazards such as space heaters, holiday trees, candles and the use of extension cords which, with space heaters, is prohibited. In particular, proximity of space heaters to fabric, furniture, and other combustibles can significantly increase the risk of fire.
The FDNY recommends – strongly – that you:
- Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord.
- Never leave a space heater unattended.
- Never use your stove or oven to heat your home.
They also have a series of very specific publications about holiday season hazards.
Other suggestions are:
- Keep space heaters at least three feet away from bedding, curtains, upholstery, and any other flammable materials.
- Water live holiday trees regularly so they do not dry out, and keep them away from heat sources.
- Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires or damaged plugs, and replace any that appear worn.
- Avoid overloading extension cords or power strips, and unplug decorations when you’re not home.
- Ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning and have fresh batteries.
- Have an emergency plan and know at least two ways out of your home or building.
- Do not charge e-bikes or e-scooters inside your apartment or building, as battery fires can ignite suddenly and spread rapidly.
