Upper West Side Cinema Center Seeks Funding to Purchase Metro Theater

The long shuttered Metro Theater on Broadway between 99th and 100th Streets maybe coming back to life.

There is an effort by the Upper West Side Cinema Center to turn the Metro Theater on W. 99th St. and Broadway into a five-screen cinema and educational center. There is a Jan. 10 deadline to come up with the $6.9 million needed to buy the building.

The organizers have raised more than half that amount already and have several large donors pending.

However, every little bit counts.

In fact, one local resident worked out that if everyone in the 10025 ZIP code gave $50, we’d have more than enough to cover the balance of the purchase price.

If you want to donate to the project or get more information, go to uwscinema.org. (All donations are tax-deductible.)

Also, the UWS Coalition of Block Associations is sponsoring an informational Zoom about the plan on Tues., Dec. 17, 11 a.m. to noon, open to all members of the community.
