WEST 104TH STREET BLOCK ASSOCIATION BLOCK BYTES

Composting Adventures

Did you know that plastic bags and wraps are not recyclable? I did not!

Here is a list of 5 things that you also might not know- I certainly did not:

  1. Paper: Not all paper is recyclable- only sort “hard” paper that can crease – envelopes, mail, printed paper, wrapping paper, paper disposable coffee cups. Do NOT include paper towels, tissue paper, waxed paper- things that crinkle but do not fold. For cardboard, please “break down” boxes. Please remove all non-recyclables from boxes such as tissue paper or the greasy liner paper from pizza boxes. Those crinkle and are not considered recyclable.
  2. Glass: Only jars and bottles – no other glass (like broken glass, light bulbs, etc.)! Please leave caps attached to the jars and bottles (even though caps are metal).Metal: All metal greater than 2″.
  3. Plastic: Only ‘rigid’ plastic that holds its shape. Do not include plastic food wraps, mailing bags. Juice and milk containers are recycled in blue bins (if you have them) because of the foil liner; they are not considered paper.
  4. Everything else goes in the regular trash – this includes wood. For mixed items such as dry cleaning bags/hangers: toss the plastic into the trash, the metal hangers go with the metal and separate the cardboard.

Happy New Year!

West 104th Street Last Night

View at night down a snowy street with snow-covered cars and tall, brick buildings lining both sides. A tree lit up by a street light in the distance.

Even the Garbage Looked Pretty

A night view of a pile of black garbage bags on the sidewalk that are covered in snow and nestled against a fire hydrant on the left. Two lit up windows in the back and a dark door to the right.

Be safe, and do keep in touch with us.

Thanks!
